Scene Breakdown: The scene of young Cardan, a prince of the fey having to live out in the barn because the other fey believe him to be a harbinger of misfortune due to a prophecy told when his was born lets us, as readers see what led to the development of Cardan Greenbriar as a character and lets us feel sorry for him. We can get a deeper feel for why Cardan ended up the way he did based on his misfortunate childhood.
